Rods on Hand

Once in a while I manage to sneak in enough time to build a rod or two to keep on hand. If you're so severely infected with "bamboo-itis" that you simply cannot wait, this is the place for you. I try to keep this section of the site up to date. Any rods described below are available now.

8' 6" 3/1 -- hollow built 9 weight. Pictured several times on the site, this rod was built for battling King Salmon in Alaska. It proved worthy of the task. Will cast a 9 weight line or a Teeny T-300 shooting head as far as the caster can handle. Darkly flamed cane, aluminum screw locking seat with a four inch removable fighting butt. Wrapped a deep emerald green with red intermediates. Cork is soiled, but otherwise the rod is in excellent condition. (Sold) Pictures

7' 2/1 4 weight
This medium fast action rod is great for everything from fishing pocket water on small streams to your favorite medium sized river. It casts beautifully in short, or fine-and-far-off. The rod features a morticed swelled butt with light cane strips inlaid among the medium cane strips. Small wells grip modeled after a grip on a Per Brandin rod. Wrapped deep red and tipped dark green. Excellent condition -- $1000 Pictures

6' 3" 2/1 4 weight This rod was made from pre-embargo bamboo and features bamboo sleeve ferrules. Rattan wrapped cigar grip. Orange wraps tipped scarlet at the stripping guide and the signature wraps. New, lawn cast only. $1350 Pictures

7' 2/1 4 weight
Demo rod based on a Payne taper. Very lightly flame toned, medium fast action. Clear wraps. Smallish straight cigar grip. Aluminum downslide seat over cork spacer. Step-down FE Thomas ferrules. Made for demonstration purposes in conjunction with the rod below. $1000 Pictures

7' 2/1 4 weight . Demo rod based on a Payne taper. Designed to try to make it as close in action as possible to the rod above, but with integrated bamboo ferrules. Not for sale. But I will gladly loan this rod and its corresponding rod above to anyone who would like to compare the two. Pictures

8' 3/2 3/4 weight Bamboo ferrules. Hollow built. Medium tan cane. Burnt orange wraps with scarlet single turn inlays. Bronzed mildrum type stripping guide. Cigar grip. My downslide custom reel seat hardware over a beautiful ash burl insert. Custom bag and tube. I fished this rod regularly during the summer and fall of 2007. Pictures (Sold)

8' 3/2 5 weight Built to my Otter Creek taper, this is among my most popular rods. Light cane with antique gold wraps tipped medium brown. Agate stripping guide. Cigar grip. Downslide seat over olive wood. New, $1750 Pictures (Sold)

8' 6" 3/2 hollow built 5 weight I built this rod for myself so I will not be too disappointed if it stays with me. Flamed cane with opaque light brown wraps tipped primrose yellow. The grip is a modified half-wells. My custom downslide reel seat hardware over a beautiful piece of moradilla insert. New, with the plastic wrapper still on the grip. $2050 Pictures

A little about me

Minister
Since the spring of 1994 I have served as Pastor of First Baptist Church in Winnsboro, Louisiana. Our church is at the same time both traditional and progressive. Being from a small town doesn't necessarily equate with being simplistic. Our folks are deep thinking, highly spiritual, radical individualists. Our fellowship is strong and warm. We are traditional, non-fundamentalist Baptists who hold fast to Bible freedom, soul freedom, church freedom and religious freedom. We are affilitated with the Cooperative Baptist Fellowship, Mainstream Baptist Network, and the Southern Baptist Convention. For a little more information about our Church, or to read a few of my old spiritual essays and sermons, please visit our site at FBC Winnsboro. I send my sermons around the world via email each Sunday. If you would like to be on the list each week, drop me a note at maker@canerods.com.

Maker of Custom Bamboo Fly Rods
No one ever said it better than Norman Maclean, "In our family, there was no clear line between religion and flyfishing." For me, that is certainly true. I build bamboo rods and fish with them in my free time. Handcrafting fine bamboo fly rods one at a time in my small garage workshop is more than a hobby, more than a labor of love -- it is almost a spiritual experience. John Gierach says it well in his wonderful book, Trout Bum, "...fly fishing is a sport in which fish are caught properly only in a certain way, often against all odds, and using rods made from a weird kind of grass that grows in China... it somehow seems appropriate." Please visit my website Boyd Rod Company to learn more about me and my rods.
